The purpose of the project : To get to know what the schools where like in 20th century through photos.

Tasks:

  1. Find and collect images, books or use other sources where you can find information about what the schools where like in 20th century.
  2. Compare modern schools and schools in 20th century. Find the common and the different.
  3. Analyze the results and draw conclusions.

A workflow :

At the begging of the project, second grade students and  their teacher studied online what the schools where like in 20th century. With information from image research and the Internet, the second graders could compare modern schools with school in the past.

Based on this information they found out that schools in the 20th century had a subject where they had to learn to write neatly to improve their handwriting. Therefore, children also had the opportunity to try their hand at this subject.

After that children looked through the textbooks from 20th century and compared them with textbooks they are using now.

Conclusions :

  1. Nowadays teaching materials are more interesting, more colorful, with more pictures.
  2. The images in books helps to better understand the subject matter.
  3. There was different rating system. “5” was the highest possible grade back than.
  4. School had stricter rules.
  5. At all school, students had to wear uniforms.
  6. The school was also due on saturdays.
  7. The students had to clean classrooms or help in the school kitchen themselves.
  8. There was a special subject for handwriting improvement.
  9. During the summers, the entire class had to go to weed school gardens and in autumn they had to help harvest potatoes. .
